300 Assaults: The Rifle Squad Assault as Part of the Platoon Attack
by Brendan B. McBreen
What can a simulation teach us about the assault? What techniques work best? What tactics? What decisions are required? Every tactical operation is simple when drawn on paper, but surprisingly complex when facing a thinking enemy on actual terrain.
Where can we learn how best to assault? In simulation. Using a simulation, we conducted 300 assaults. The repetition and the 300 results provided tremendous insights on the importance of pinpointing the enemy’s location, overwhelming him with suppressive fire, reading the terrain, and advancing by fire and movement.
